WordPress or Astro in 2026: which to choose for your site?

An honest comparison: performance, SEO, cost, maintenance and use cases. Which CMS fits your project?

WordPress vs Astro: the key differences

WordPress is a dynamic CMS (PHP + MySQL) that generates pages on demand. It powers 43% of the global web (W3Techs, 2026), offers an ecosystem of 60,000 plugins, and suits sites with frequently updated content. Astro is a 'static-first' JavaScript framework: it generates static HTML pages at build time, with no client-side JavaScript by default. Result: pages 3 to 5× lighter than WordPress.

The choice depends on your context. WordPress excels for blogs, e-commerce sites (WooCommerce) and non-technical teams managing content daily. Astro is built for showcase sites, high-performance landing pages and projects where technical SEO and speed are priorities.

Performance and Core Web Vitals

2026 benchmarks (Web Almanac, HTTP Archive) show Astro sites reach an average Lighthouse score of 95+/100 versus 65-75/100 for WordPress with standard plugins. The LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) of an optimized Astro site is typically under 1.5s versus 2.5 to 4s for WordPress on shared hosting. On mobile, the gap is even wider: less JavaScript means faster startup on slow connections.

WordPress can reach good scores with premium hosting (Kinsta, WP Engine), a CDN and specific optimizations (WP Rocket, Imagify). But these optimizations carry a recurring monthly cost (€200 to €500/year) and technical complexity. Astro achieves the same results without extra effort.

SEO: who actually wins?

Both platforms can reach the top of Google. But Astro offers a structural advantage on Core Web Vitals, a ranking factor since 2021. An Astro site generates pure HTML immediately indexable by Googlebot, with no dependency on client-side rendering. WordPress, with heavy themes, can create client-side rendering issues that delay indexing of certain content.

On the other hand, WordPress has mature SEO plugins (Yoast, RankMath) with a graphical interface, ideal for non-technical teams. Astro requires manual configuration (meta tags, sitemap, robots.txt, JSON-LD) or specialized libraries. This is something we handle systematically in our projects.

Total cost of ownership over 3 years

  1. 1 A standard WordPress site costs €3,500 to €12,000 to build, then €800 to €2,400/year in maintenance (updates, backups, premium hosting). Over 3 years: €5,900 to €19,
  2. 2 2
  3. 3 0
  4. 4 An Astro site costs €4,500 to €15,000 to build, then €120 to €360/year in hosting (Vercel, Netlify). Over 3 years: €4,860 to €16,
  5. 5 0
  6. 6 8
  7. 7 At an equivalent scope, Astro is cheaper over time.

WordPress has a lower opportunity cost if your team manages content itself: the admin interface is accessible without technical training. Astro requires a developer for structural changes.

Maintenance and security

WordPress is the target of 90% of CMS attacks (Sucuri, 2024) due to its popularity. Third-party plugins are the vector for 97% of WordPress vulnerabilities (WPScan, 2023). Without regular maintenance (weekly updates, firewall, monitoring), a WordPress site can be compromised quickly.

A static Astro site has no database, no PHP, no exposed admin interface: the attack surface is near-zero. Maintenance is limited to hosting renewal and quarterly framework updates.

What's right for your project?

Choose WordPress if: your team publishes content daily without a developer, you run a high-volume blog or a WooCommerce store, or your project needs complex plugin-based features. Choose Astro if: your site is primarily a showcase or landing page, performance and SEO are priorities, or you want the lowest possible maintenance cost.

Our default recommendation for showcase sites and SMBs: Astro. For e-commerce and non-technical editorial teams: WordPress with premium hosting. In both cases, check our bespoke website creation service for a choice tailored to your context.

Questions & answers

01 Can an Astro site have a blog managed by a non-technical team?
Not natively without a developer for structural changes. If your team publishes content daily with no technical skills, WordPress remains better suited.
02 Why is WordPress hacked more often than Astro?
90% of CMS attacks target WordPress (Sucuri, 2024), notably via third-party plugins, responsible for 97% of vulnerabilities (WPScan, 2023). A static Astro site has neither a database nor an exposed admin interface: its attack surface is near-zero.
