Web agency or freelancer: how to choose in 2026?

The real criteria for choosing between a web agency and a freelancer based on your project, budget and support needs.

The main differences

A web agency brings together several roles under one roof: project manager, developers, designers, writers, SEO experts. It can absorb large volumes and handle complex projects with multiple contacts. A freelancer works alone or with a network of occasional partners. They're often specialized in one or two skills and can offer a better value-for-money ratio on targeted projects.

The line has blurred a lot since 2020. Many 'studios' or 'agencies' are actually solo operators with a network of subcontractors. And some senior freelancers have as much skill as a small agency. The legal format matters less than the actual profile of the person doing the work.

When to choose an agency?

A structured agency is preferable when: your project is complex (international e-commerce, SaaS platform, multilingual site with integrations), you need several skill sets simultaneously (design + dev + SEO + copy), you have a procurement department requiring formalized contracts and continuity guarantees, or your workload justifies a dedicated team.

Watch out for agencies that sell you 'senior' in the meeting and deliver 'junior' in production. Always ask: who actually does the work, can I talk to them before signing?

When to choose a freelancer?

A senior freelancer is often the best choice when: your project is targeted (showcase site redesign, technical SEO, GEO campaign), you're looking for a single contact who does the work themselves, your budget is between €3,000 and €25,000, or you need responsiveness and flexibility a larger structure can't always offer.

A senior freelancer generally bills €500 to €900 per day. On a 15-day project, that's €7,500 to €13,500. Often less than an agency for an equivalent result, since you're not paying overhead.

The solo agency case (independent studio)

The 'solo agency' model (one expert leading and doing the core of the project, with a network of tailored partners) often offers the best of both worlds: a freelancer's specialization and responsiveness, combined with the ability to cover a broader range of skills. This is WebConsulting's model.

In this model, you always know who does what. You have a single contact who knows your project end to end, and occasional partners integrated without friction.

5 questions to ask before signing

  1. 1 Who will actually deliver my project? (not who supervises, but who codes, who writes, who optimizes).
  2. 2 Can you show me recent projects similar to mine, with their results?
  3. 3 Who owns the code and access at the end of the project?
  4. 4 What's the realistic delivery timeline, and what happens if it slips?
  5. 5 What's the total cost, all options included, and what's not included?

These five questions quickly filter serious providers from over-promising structures. A good provider answers all of them without hesitation.

Questions & answers

01 Is a freelancer at €500/day necessarily cheaper than an agency?
On a targeted 15-day project, yes: €7,500 to €13,500 versus often more at an agency for an equivalent result, since you're not paying overhead. On a complex multi-skill project, the agency regains the advantage.
02 What exactly is a 'solo agency'?
A model where one expert leads and does most of the project themselves, with a network of occasional partners for complementary skills. This is WebConsulting's model.
